Copyright is a law that protects the creator or owner of an image from being damaged or vandalised by others, this is under the law the 'copyright,designs and patents act 1988.
If you take a picture or a graphic in for example Photoshop you have edited and changed it therfore it is yours, you own the copyright instantly You will not need to apply for copyright.
However if the photograph or the graphic was created by a third person , or taken as while working within employment, copyright is owned by the third person or your employer.
Copyright lasts when the creator of the image dies plus 70 years after the death of the creator.
The Copyright holder can allow permission or license anyone else to use their creation.
The exceptions when wprking with copyright are fair dealing, library privilege, copying for examinations and copying for instruction.
